Dad Can't Draw started out as a CLI tool I used to create coloring pages that my kids actually wanted to color.

Hello Hunters! πŸ‘‹ I'm Josh, a father of 3 under 4y/o, ex-chef/cook of 18 years, mostly self-taught dev & I guess now *actually* an indie maker. For the past few years I've been trying to transition from kitchen work to a job in tech. For the past couple of months I've been working on Dad Can't Draw, an AI-powered coloring page generator. I'm super excited to share it with you all today! It's a simple concept, but as my very first "real" project (also first Product Hunt launch) & I'm quite proud of it. Here's how it works: Each new account gets 10 free generations to try it out. On the dashboard you will be greeted by a prompt: "What would you like to color today?" Simply type in the subject that you would like to color, for example, my 3y/o son's favorite: "a dinosaur driving a truck" Wait a few seconds & Viola! A custom coloring page tailored to your request The generations are not perfect & it may take a couple tries or some re-wording to get exactly what you want, but it makes for a fun interaction seeing what surprises will be generated next. This is being worked on & will only continue to get better. I'm also currently working on adding to the feature set, including the ability to generate multiple images at the same time, generate coloring pages from your own uploaded images, image post-processing, etc. Anyway, I look forward to any feedback you all may have & would also LOVE to see any creations that you/your little ones come up with. Thanks & take care!

@joshmccoydev what a journey from the kitchen to coding! Dad Can’t Draw 🎨 sounds like a fun way to spark creativity for kids and parents alike. It’s impressive to see your first project come to life, especially one that brings such joy. Excited to see where your tech adventure takes you next! πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ All the best Josh!

@joshmccoydev hey Josh, great tool! Love it! But I was wondering, what is in the background? Is this a simple prompt or have you created something unique?
Josh Mc Coy
@shadmannazim thank you for the kind words!
Josh Mc Coy
@dennisbabych yes, at its core this MVP is a relatively simple prompt combining the user's input with a selection of keywords & negative keywords.

@joshmccoydev Great story ! It is very inspiring what you did . I think that I can help you bring this product to the next level and discuss certain drawbacks with it too. DM me on telegram @dhananjaybuidl and I would love to connect further !

This is so awesome! My daughter always asks me to draw stuff, and for the life of me, I can’t do it better than 1st grade levelπŸ˜‚ I’ll definitely surprise my daughter with a custom colouring book!

@joshmccoydev Hi Josh! Congrats on the launch! Love the name 'Dad Can't Draw' and it sounds like a wonderful way for kids and parents to have fun together. A little suggestion here Perhaps you could add a feature that allows users to share their generated coloring pages with others. This could help spread creativity and warmth among families, making your product a hub for community and sharing. What do you think?

Great job turning a fun family activity into a tech project! How do you handle ensuring the generated images are safe and appropriate for kids?
Josh Mc Coy
@memphys_sk right now it is simply mentioned in the prompt. in the future i was thinking maybe of some form of content detection to handle this. i’m not sure how easily implemented this will be, but it’s worth looking into.

This sounds like a delightful and practical tool, Josh! I'm sure many parents will appreciate it. How does the AI handle more complex or abstract prompts? Also, do you have plans for expanding the art styles or themes available for the coloring pages?
Josh Mc Coy
@kyrylosilin There is some issue when it comes to things that have color by nature ex: black of space, colors being included into rainbows, sports team colors, etc. but I think I may have come close to fixing that a few hours ago. It also seems to struggle with subjects/characters that are newer, as LLMs have cutoff dates for their knowledge ATM. I will be adding a roadmap of features to the landing page ASAP, so users can know what to expect in the future.

@joshmccoydev Thanks for the update! Looking forward to seeing how Dad Can't Draw evolves! I have a 2-year old and she loves to draw. It's early for her to color paintings in a meaningful way, though, so I am not your customer yet 😁
