Which financial decision changed your life positively?

Money is not everything, but it can be a means to generate happiness. I am just honest. :D

What steps / financial decisions changed your life for the better in the long run?

For me, these were:

  • I had good academic results at school, so I received scholarships - I saved them to buy equipment (a camera) with which I could learn – now video/photo production partially earns me money.

  • I started working part-time jobs at a relatively early age, so I also saved some money.

  • I pitched in an accelerator, received a grant and bought the first things for a business – the business was not successful, but it encouraged me to do something.

  • I divided the money into various assets that generate income.

Setting up automatic monthly investments instead of trying to time the market.

@ashutosh_mutatkar What soft do you use?

@busmark_w_nika I’m using Groww right now to automate SIPs. What do you use on your side? Always looking for better tool

Nika

@ashutosh_mutatkar I only invested via Trading 212

@busmark_w_nika Ah, Trading 212! I tried it once but ended up switching to Groww since I’m in India. How do you like the interface and automation there?

And as a kid i hustled my bum off to build some assets, learn how to handle money & develop some battle wounds (plus some literal battle wounds - we grew up rough lol) Had kids young so I setup 2 fairly boring businesses that could be largely automated (self storage and legal document software for accountants) so my responsibilities were taken care of and I could give myself as much time as I like available for taking massive risks without needing to raise much capital. Money is not everything but you are screwed without it. And it doesn’t solve all your problems but it solves all your money problems.

@cam_mcmaster1 It is still good to have some financial certainty. I cannot imagine a situation where someone doesn't have money when the washing machine is broken. Such a basic thing, but they cannot afford it.

Love how you linked early choices to long-term impact! I started small too saving from part-time work and it surprisingly shaped my approach to bigger financial decisions later. Curious, which of your steps ended up being the most unexpectedly useful?

Nika

@apoorvajain I already shared them! :D

A very interesting question. I always answer that it’s important to invest in ourselves, because we can earn more and improve our quality of life if we use our knowledge wisely. There should also be filters, because we cannot know everything or be professionals in four different fields. That’s difficult. So being a professional in one field while having knowledge in other areas can be very helpful in life :)

Nika

@ixord Maybe specialisation in 2 areas while trying to cover more generalistic topics? I think that people can expand their knowledge to all directions :)

Igor Lysenko

@busmark_w_nika People can do that, but we cannot become professionals in multiple fields at once and maintain that level. However, having a basic knowledge of other professions definitely provides an excellent foundation for a career

@ixord There are some exceptions, tho. I know one guy who is a doctor, won championships in some sports like swimming, canoeing, and is a municipal politician. But these people are more like unicorns :D
