Hello! I am Nick Koenen, the founder of Houstr. Long story short, I used to own an Airbnb and a mattress store. I put two and two together and started selling mattresses to my guests. My first year doing this netted me an extra $2k in profits and was the genesis for Houstr. Our thought process is that Airbnbs and hotels are essentially 4-walled innfluencers, and until Houstr, there was no easy way for them to monetize their influence. From real life product impressions to recommendations from "local experts," Houstr aims to ensure these properties are properly compensated while giving brands a real life distribution channel to reach their audience. We offer the ability to monetize over 10 thousand brands and retailers. Businesses are able to tailor their offer and matchmake with the best, most relevant properties based on their target customer and location. Some examples of items that can be monetized and purchased via Houstr are: 🎨 The paint color or wallpaper 🚗 Car rentals 🍳 A pestocked fridge 🛌 The mattress they slept on 🖼️ Handmade goods from locals 🎟️ Tickets to concerts and events 🚲 Bicycle rentals ♾️ Your own custom upsells We're super excited about bringing the native retail concept to the short-term rental industry! To sign up for Houstr, please visit 👉🏼 https://www.houstr.com/strs/ If you know a host that could benefit from Houstr, check out our referral program 👉🏼https://www.houstr.com/referral/ New registers will receive their first 6 months free! I've seen a few companies exploring this space. The idea is compelling -- turning foot traffic and idle shelf space into found revenue. But I always worried the ROI wouldn't be worth it for hosts. How much are hosts making so far, @nick_koenen?
Nick Koenen
@rrhoover you’re correct that it’s challenging to be at the intersection of someone that’s in need of a new mattress, for example, has the disposable income to make an impulse purchase on one, and happens to be staying at a Houstr property. With that said, hosts can monetize experiences and services through Houstr as well, which tends to convert higher in the context of a vacation. We also have a “self-managed” product feature where hosts can charge for things like early check in, pre-stocked fridges, and just about anything they want to add to their store. Hosts that utilize this feature tend to make the most money - about $60/month for your average Airbnb listing. We’re exploring partnerships that will enable more value to be driven from brand to consumer, and vice versa, which we’re thinking will help with conversions. Overall, taking the approach of matchmaking consumers to relevant business categories through tailored offerings is what I believe will maximize the value of our platform and the amount that a host can earn. Thank you for the question Ryan!

Interesting concept to transform spaces into product selling platforms! Congrats! Are you planning to offer local store products to reduce adoption friction?
Nick Koenen
Hi @ncaccia ! Thanks for the question. Our goal is to open up Houstr to any business - large or small, national or local - that wants to leverage the real life retail model and build up their ecosystem of referral partners 😁

@ncaccia @nick_koenen WOW 😲😲 it's amazing project 💯

Wow, this may be the most innovative business I've seen here in quite some time. Making your physical space a referal/affiliate buying experience, or am I wrong in this description? Would love to know more about it! Would any of you guys be up for a call to understand the business a bit more? 😃
Nick Koenen
@nuno_ms_reis appreciate the comment and you are spot on with your description! Would love to hop on a call! Send me an email at nickk@houstr.com

Here's an idea, what if you offer a way for hosts to integrate their curated list of products or experiences into a wifi captive portal during login, so guests for sure see it.
Nick Koenen
@jeffarukwe great idea! WiFi is pretty much an essential to 99% of guests and is something we’re looking at doing ourselves or with a couple of providers out there that require a first party data capture to access the WiFi. Thank you for the suggestion Jeff!
Jennifer Hoaglund
What a fantastic idea! We use Houstr for our Airbnbs and our guests love it! As an added benefit it puts a meaningful amount of extra money in our pockets. Wishing you all the success!
Nick Koenen
@jennifer_hoaglund Thank you! We appreciate your business and love to see the success you've had with the platform!!

I love the concept! A great way for BnB owners to add value for their clients and capture a new revenue stream while they're at it.
