Joining and learning about PH after 10 years in marketing – what did you learn recently?

by

10 years ago, when I started in marketing, I had never heard of Product Hunt.

Today I’m here – and honestly, I feel like a newcomer trying to find my way among people who build and launch world-class products. What I genuinely love so far is how open and supportive this community feels. It’s a beautiful ecosystem to witness. 🙌

So here’s my first question:

What’s a new skill you had to learn recently – something you never expected you’d be doing a few years ago?
It can be anything: AI workflows, distribution, community building, product writing, analytics, founder-led marketing…

I’d love to learn from your answers!

Marketing! And I stink at it. Have a product I've built with Zero users. I've tried Instantly, Apollo, n8n, Apify, to get interest and it hasn't been effective. I'm a list guy so if anyone has a step by step plan to execute I'd love it!

@tinyorgtech Hey Matthew! Thanks for your comment! 🙏 Well… Even after 10 years in marketing, I feel like I'm constantly discovering how much I actually don't know. It's a never-ending learning curve, especially with AI changing everything! I love automations too, but I’ve realized they only work when the foundation is solid. Since you are at zero users, here are two simple things I’d try before adding more tools: - Talk to 5 potential users manually: No AI, just a quick chat to see if they actually care about the problem you're solving. - Refine your 'One Sentence': If you can't explain your value in 10 seconds, no automation tool will save it. Focus on the 'why' first, and then use your AI skills to scale it up. We’re in this together! I’m actually working in Cursor right now and still feel like I'm barely scratching the surface of what it can do. There's always something new to learn! 😁 You've got this!

New too. It is Dazzling and challenging, which is not necessarily a bad thing.
I am still learning strategies of Marketing. One moment, I decide to pay a huge sum of money and let ad engines do the heavy lifting, but then I feel stupid to only pay with no knowledge and no deep thinking of what marekting is. Surely, marketing is much more than paying websites and agencies.

I am exploring to get some help. I saw your other reply and it is helpful, especially the 10 seconds showing value, that is also what my AI told me :) Something I wouldn't have guessed first thing.

And yes, the community here seems great to be part of. Surrounded by smart people, rule No. 1 to succeed.

@mohiza96 Spot on, Moe! Budget can definitely pay off, but it's such an alchemy – sometimes you have to micro-manage and tweak campaigns every few hours to not burn through it. So don't feel bad about it at all, it's a steep learning curve for everyone! It’s so funny that your AI gave you the same 10-second rule advice! It clearly works. If I may add one more tip: don't be afraid to experiment, and remember that not every experiment has to be expensive. I’ve personally spent most of my career in environments with very tight budgets. It actually helped me a lot to prioritize and learn exactly where it’s worth investing and where it's not. My advice? Try to think as if you had zero budget. It forces you to be much more creative with your positioning. We're all in this together! Good luck with the next steps. 🙂
