Hey Product Hunt 👋 I’m Abhas, the maker of Gitdocs AI. I built this because writing README files is one of the most boring but important parts of shipping software. Most repos either have outdated docs or none at all. Gitdocs AI analyzes your GitHub repository and generates a clean, structured README in minutes — and lets you customize or upgrade existing docs easily. Would love your feedback: • What part of docs do you hate most? • Would this fit your workflow? Thanks for checking it out 🚀

Docs are the first thing I skip, then regret. If this can read my messy monorepo and spit a sane README without babysitting, I’ll kick the tires. Templates help. Mostly curious about consistency over time. Free for now = good excuse to try on a side project.

Totally hear you 😄 Just to add — Gitdocs AI will remain free, and we’re also working on an option where users can bring their own API keys for custom usage. We’re extending support carefully and putting the right security measures in place to handle this properly.

Would love to hear how it works on your side project!

I have always dreaded writing docs, so Gitdocs AI feels like a breath of fresh air. The agentic workflow seems to actually understand my code instead of spit out generic text. Can’t wait to try it on my main repo especially while it’s free.

Abhas Kumar Sinha

@bellastone That’s great to hear, thank you! Really happy the agentic workflow feels useful and not generic. Would love to hear how it performs on your main repo when you try it out 🙌

Our team finally got tired of outdated README files, so we tried Gitdocs AI and it’s impressive how much structure it adds automatically. Multiple templates are a huge win for different types of projects too.

Abhas Kumar Sinha

@saman_baloch Really glad to hear that — thank you! Happy the structure and templates are adding value across different projects.
Would love to know which template worked best for your team 🙌

Tried it out—this really hits a pain point for me. After creating a repo and pushing the implementation forward, writing a solid README before publishing is always the part I end up procrastinating on.

I've tried using coding agents for documentation too, but I rarely get output I'm fully happy with. I'm sure I could tweak prompts and iterate, but I'd rather spend that time building new features—so a product like this is genuinely valuable.

Also, the GitHub integration flow (separating read-only and write permissions) is a very thoughtful touch. Love that approach. Rooting for you!

@toyamarinyon Thanks a lot for the kind words — really appreciate you trying it out and sharing this. We’re constantly adding and refining features to make the experience feel even better over time. Also glad you liked the separation of read-only and write permissions — we wanted the GitHub integration to feel safe and intentional from day one. 🙌

Congratulations on the new launch! The idea with templates is great.

Abhas Kumar Sinha

@mykyta_semenov_ Thank you so much! 🙌 Glad you liked the template idea. We’ve also rolled out recent improvements to image addition, making it easier to add, manage, and organize visuals in your docs—more flexibility, better flow.

🚀 New update with this launch!

Gitdocs AI now runs on a more robust agentic AI workflow that deeply understands your repository and generates documentation with consistent, reliable responses and nearly zero downtime.

This version also introduces multiple ready-to-use templates, making industry-standard documentation easier than ever — no more starting from scratch.

And for this launch, Gitdocs AI is completely free.

Would love to hear:

• Which templates you’d want next?

• What part of documentation slows you down the most?

Thanks for checking it out 🙌

Quick update:

Really appreciate the early feedback 🙌

If you’re using Gitdocs AI today, I’d love to know:

• What kind of project are you documenting?

• Which template would you want next?

• Are the generated READMEs meeting your expectations?

Abhas Kumar Sinha

Small note based on feedback today:

Along with improving consistency, we’re also working on image uploads

(diagrams, screenshots) to make generated docs more complete.

Congrats on the launch 👏 GitDocs AI is a clever way to make READMEs less painful and more useful. Curious....are early users mostly solo devs looking for quick READMEs, or teams standardizing multiple repos? The interactive chat and smart AI templates look great, but it might help new users know which workflow gives the fastest value, generating from scratch, upgrading, or refining sections. Which feature are your users loving most so far...automatic repo analysis, AI model selection, or real-time chat?
Abhas Kumar Sinha

@samtheanalyst Thanks a lot!

So far, most early users are solo devs and indie builders who want a solid README quickly before shipping or making a repo public.

The most loved features right now are the auto-generated content (especially from repo analysis) and the ready-to-use templates, which help skip the blank-page problem and get to something polished fast.
