I believe Reddit’s Rule 8 may have been applied too strictly in my case. I reported videos that caused me stress, anxiety, and even depression, as they seemed to contain harmful behavior that contradicts Reddit’s goal of fostering a safe, inclusive space. Rather than addressing these concerns, I received a penalty for report abuse. I feel Rule 8 should help protect users from content that may contribute to a hostile environment; however, enforcing it in this way discourages people from reporting issues in good faith and seems to prioritize strict policy adherence over user well-being.
This experience has led me to feel that Reddit's approach to enforcing community standards could be improved, especially when compared to other platforms like TikTok and Facebook, where similar issues exist. I hope Reddit reconsiders its approach to handling reports on potentially harmful content and ensures advertisements are consistent with its stated values. Users deserve a platform that considers mental health impacts carefully and takes them seriously.
